All I want for Christmas, or anytime really, is Trump in jail. As you point out so often, Blacks are in jail while whites go free, like Bannon. Why is the DOJ, Garland, et al waiting? He committed these crimes, is still grifting the low IQ Americans who support his lies and the rest of us have to listen to the constant crap from Rupublicans. We, the people, need this to be reconciled.

Just stolen top secret documents hidden and not all returned waiting for referrals from January 6th committee ? Why ? DOJ you have evidence Yet wikileaks pursued? The messages must be made now time is ticking. Do you hear toe overly words publicly clearly stated 🤔

It would be refreshing if we could stop hearing "no one is above the law". White males with money, power or influence are clearly above the law. SloppySteve Bannon spends his days fomenting dissent that clearly involves violence yet he walks free. Donald Trump has exhibited criminal and unethical behavior since the day he became an adult yet he's been litigating his way out of prison for decades. SO sick of this. So sick of this, I honestly wish I had the means to become an expat; I'd go in a freaking heartbeat. I don't recognize the country I live in.

It's been TWO years since the InsurrectionistInChief committed treason, along with his henchmen in the Republican party. I'm a black woman with no money or influence; you think I'd be walking around free if I'd fomented domestic violence or had stolen government secrets? Reality Winner went to prison. Edward Snowden had to leave the country. Trump took the documents, mishandled them, and lied about it, full stop. "Don't give up"? Tell it to Merrick Garland...

LeeW, we all hear your cry and you are correct! Still, I believe he is going to jail. Some of the ire that people have is not about Trump, but those heading our law enforcement agencies that permit his escape. On the other hand, some forget Trump’s sister was a judge, plus he was affiliated allegedly with organized crime. So, he knows how to use all the LEGAL laws to tire out prosecutors, or to delay towards a favorable ruling. If you notice, the tables are turning against him. That negativity will aid in propelling us towards justice. His day is coming--and soon. Keep the faith!

Hi Diva!!! Very well said. This former guy definitely has learned how to slither his way around the law, and he still continues to get away.. After 7 years, I do have faith he will finally be held accountable.

Good to connect with you.again. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year. Be safe my friend, take care.🙏❤🎄

And THAT is the thing: Seven years of public and political grifting of international and domestic emoluments-seemingly, unresolved.🤬 Beneficiaries of insider trading, business deals, etc.: Family, friends, acquaintances, and affiliated party members. Those who went or were jail bound—he pardoned. For me, he entered the Oval Office a criminal and exited a kingpin.

I think he is closer to going to jail than I did before. And I think the GOP are secretly hoping so, especially after his announcement to run. They want to get as far away from him as possible but without publicly saying so. And him going to jail or being charged would be their exit. As long as his guilt isn't bleeding over on them, they will be fine with it and move on to the next Trump. But I'm not going to ever forget Navarro saying over 100 Republican congressional members were a part of the Green Bay Sweep coup. And Trump isn't above bringing everyone down with him.

Hi C.G.😊 Yes I agree with you. Those cowards are so scared of the orange mafia boss. Hope he brings them ALL down with him. They can't get away with their part in the attempted coup. Keeping hope alive for accountability!!!

On 12/15/22, you said the LoserInChief's day is coming. Two more months have passed. I don't think his day is ever coming. I'm so disgusted, I am running out of words for the level of disgust I feel for him, his corrupt family, and the chickensh## DOJ who would have thrown anyone else in prison long, long ago.

LeeW, are you tracking my words?😂😂😂. I’d best be careful! I’m standing by my statement, in spite of Ms Kohrs reveal. Don’t know if she’s trying to push DA Willis or thwart it altogether. Yes, “anyone else,” would have gone to prison-in jail, anyway. Our hearts keep us wishing it so, but our heads know, he isn’t like anyone else-not even a regular criminal! It is why he was free to even run for president. He knows how to exacerbate all situations; to put prosecutors on the defensive, to deny, to challenge, to threaten, and yes, to get treatment that no one else gets. That said, I stand tall, that his azz is going to prison! If not, you will make me eat every piece of hay…🤮😂

Be careful what we wish for. Yes, Trump is a loser but MAGAs are alive and well. DeSantis is much worse. Trump’s only concern is his ego; DeSantis’s is gaining and using maniacal power. He will be the choice of Republicans— he’s Trump w/o the chaos. And he’s smarter, more manipulative, and meaner. In a word, he’s a fascist who cannot abide dissent. To Republicans, his military background, together with Ivy League degrees, makes him the more “acceptable” candidate. But he is infinitely worse than Trump.

Expand full comment

Without question, DeSantis is worse. The right wing faction of the GOP is determined to send people of color, women, and the LGBTQ+ community back into second class citizenship and not enough is being done to stop it. McConnell is too old and too weak; McCarthy will sell his children for power. This is a 'hair on fire' situation that needs to be dealt with NOW before the insurrectionist wing of the GOP takes over.. and by the way, why aren't THEY in jail, or at the very least, why are there no laws or regulations in place to boot them OUT of Congress for insurrection. The proof is in the text messages and in their various speeches. What MORE is required??

Agree and sadly that means there needs to be a vigorous oppo when he runs, a new inspiring candidate, I wish here like Gretchen Witmer, who is accustomed to running the ship of state, or some other good candidate that can be blessed by the old demos.

Gavin is one of several. However, should Biden run, he’ll have my vote. He’s had a lot of successes and bent over backwards for bipartisanship. It would be unwise to come with a newbie-just because!

It will be Biden for me also. Dems would be absolutely dumb to try to primary Biden at a time when the Republicans have control of the House and willl constantly beclown themselves. We should be able to cruise right into control of the House in 2024 because of their recklessness. We need to be smart.

Well said! The other problem for DeSantis, Trump had/has a certain likability that he does not! As these guys are going to court or pleading out, DeSantis will find himself either conforming to the MAGA House or doing a 180 flip. That leaves him in the quandary you defined above.

He is just as much chaos, but not a buffoon. He'll have to pray Trump is going to jail or charged, because Trump still has the majority of MAGA. And Trump already said he knows a lot about Desantis that he'd be willing to share. So it will be a very ugly primary and Trump with his ridiculous name calling will probably win out.

Time will tell, but my bet is that as long as Trump has a challenger who personifies what he stands for, times 10, then that’s who Trumpers will go for. I live in the most conservative community in Fl—maybe even in the country. Here is what happened here: “Villagers for Trump” quickly morphed into “Villagers for MAGA.” The signs changed overnight. DeSantis personifies just what they're looking for.

Yes, somehow we all need to learn together what malignant narcissism looks like.

My mom, an Italian immigrant with no schooling never less sensed a “snake in the grass” as a threat. We all need to learn to be critical thinkers, like building the plane while it’s flying, but I believe if you keep obviating the bullshit and costs to life, eg, Hotez report on red county covid deaths,

We can all learn.

I would add an important point missing here. Trump is not the cause; he’s the symptom of a party dying of greed. Republicans aren’t losing because of Trump. They’re losing because they’re sole platform has been to to win power, and they’ll support anything and anyone to get there. Look at their blatant embrace of fascism to destroy democracy, because they know they can’t win in a democracy anymore. American voters are finally becoming aware of the impact of Citizens United. Even Republican voters are beginning to see that they’ve lost the influence of their votes to billionaire corporate donors and God only knows how many foreign adversaries.

In sum, Republicans are losing elections for a deeper reason. They have no platform to uphold their oaths of office and don’t even pretend to. “GREED and OBSTRUCTION for POWER” is not a winning slogan. Think back to when Republicans like Rick Perry called Trump “the Chosen One.” The last leader I know of who was called that by his sycophants was Adolph Hitler.

Hi Ari,

I was watching your analysis of the quick response to the quick and effective German response to the putative coup. You stated that it is too bad that the US can't act as precipitously. Unlike the US constitution, which assumed sanity and rationality, the Germans knew better when they drafted their constitution. There is a specific article in it that makes it illegal to be an anti-democratic party or fascist. In other words, the constitution enables rapid arrests of coup plotters, far-right or far-left. Despite my frustration with the slowness of the American system, slowness should be seen as a virtue rather than a vice. And, most important, the Trump experience has demonstrated how the laws of this country have been written to excuse bad behavior: mens rea for a coup or tax fraud (just joking), the absence thereof for robbing a gas station or liquor store (I thought it was a loan with an optional pay-back plan). The problem isn't the constitution, its the people who write laws that discriminate by virtue of class or race.

Great column Ari. I appreciate your having other venues to compliment your work on The Beat on MSNBC, which I record daily so I won't miss a Beat, pardon the pun.

Your often used phrase, keeping it real, defines your work. Your Beat segment is more news than other similar programs and it shows in your guests, some of whom are not always sympathetic. You must be doing something right to bring people on who put up with your probing questions. Your go-to commentators like Michael Steele, Maya Wiley, Chai Kommenduri (sp?) are my favorite nights. It's great that Michael Cohen is finding his voice and you guys have given him that chance often. I assume we are seeing his rehabilitation after years of working for u no hoo. I find him authentic and honest. Your culture interviews are wonderful. We know you got music down. Perhaps more art and film if you are willing to venture? I'm sure you can handle it.

Isn’t respecting democracy what politics is all about in this country?? It certainly should be and, sadly, frequently isn’t…witness MTG, Gym Jordan, Lindsey Graham, Trumpty currently.

Historically the country has been repeatedly reminded of the authoritarian elements simmering at or near the surface…witness the Civil War (That wasn’t an authoritarian thing, you say? How might you define owning people??), sympathy for the Nazis during the ‘30s (Ask Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford and the American Nazi Party gathering at Madison Square Garden in 1938 about that.), ask Barry Goldwater about “extremism in defense of liberty”. Ask Richard Nixon.

True democracy is indeed a fragile thing.
