All I want for Christmas, or anytime really, is Trump in jail. As you point out so often, Blacks are in jail while whites go free, like Bannon. Why is the DOJ, Garland, et al waiting? He committed these crimes, is still grifting the low IQ Americans who support his lies and the rest of us have to listen to the constant crap from Rupublicans. We, the people, need this to be reconciled.

It would be refreshing if we could stop hearing "no one is above the law". White males with money, power or influence are clearly above the law. SloppySteve Bannon spends his days fomenting dissent that clearly involves violence yet he walks free. Donald Trump has exhibited criminal and unethical behavior since the day he became an adult yet he's been litigating his way out of prison for decades. SO sick of this. So sick of this, I honestly wish I had the means to become an expat; I'd go in a freaking heartbeat. I don't recognize the country I live in.

Be careful what we wish for. Yes, Trump is a loser but MAGAs are alive and well. DeSantis is much worse. Trump’s only concern is his ego; DeSantis’s is gaining and using maniacal power. He will be the choice of Republicans— he’s Trump w/o the chaos. And he’s smarter, more manipulative, and meaner. In a word, he’s a fascist who cannot abide dissent. To Republicans, his military background, together with Ivy League degrees, makes him the more “acceptable” candidate. But he is infinitely worse than Trump.

Ari, your show yesterday, December 14th was probably the BEST show in your entire run so far. I learn so much by watching “The Beat”. Thank you for being such a strong advocate in the fight to save our Democracy, and to end H8 against our LGBTQ brothers & sisters. You ROCK Ari Melber!

I would add an important point missing here. Trump is not the cause; he’s the symptom of a party dying of greed. Republicans aren’t losing because of Trump. They’re losing because they’re sole platform has been to to win power, and they’ll support anything and anyone to get there. Look at their blatant embrace of fascism to destroy democracy, because they know they can’t win in a democracy anymore. American voters are finally becoming aware of the impact of Citizens United. Even Republican voters are beginning to see that they’ve lost the influence of their votes to billionaire corporate donors and God only knows how many foreign adversaries.

In sum, Republicans are losing elections for a deeper reason. They have no platform to uphold their oaths of office and don’t even pretend to. “GREED and OBSTRUCTION for POWER” is not a winning slogan. Think back to when Republicans like Rick Perry called Trump “the Chosen One.” The last leader I know of who was called that by his sycophants was Adolph Hitler.

Love your articles, bringing me up to speed, as a Canadian watching this from not too far away physically but realizing mentally that what is happening in the US is truly beyond my ken.

Thank you, Ari

Hi Ari,

I was watching your analysis of the quick response to the quick and effective German response to the putative coup. You stated that it is too bad that the US can't act as precipitously. Unlike the US constitution, which assumed sanity and rationality, the Germans knew better when they drafted their constitution. There is a specific article in it that makes it illegal to be an anti-democratic party or fascist. In other words, the constitution enables rapid arrests of coup plotters, far-right or far-left. Despite my frustration with the slowness of the American system, slowness should be seen as a virtue rather than a vice. And, most important, the Trump experience has demonstrated how the laws of this country have been written to excuse bad behavior: mens rea for a coup or tax fraud (just joking), the absence thereof for robbing a gas station or liquor store (I thought it was a loan with an optional pay-back plan). The problem isn't the constitution, its the people who write laws that discriminate by virtue of class or race.

Great column Ari. I appreciate your having other venues to compliment your work on The Beat on MSNBC, which I record daily so I won't miss a Beat, pardon the pun.

Your often used phrase, keeping it real, defines your work. Your Beat segment is more news than other similar programs and it shows in your guests, some of whom are not always sympathetic. You must be doing something right to bring people on who put up with your probing questions. Your go-to commentators like Michael Steele, Maya Wiley, Chai Kommenduri (sp?) are my favorite nights. It's great that Michael Cohen is finding his voice and you guys have given him that chance often. I assume we are seeing his rehabilitation after years of working for u no hoo. I find him authentic and honest. Your culture interviews are wonderful. We know you got music down. Perhaps more art and film if you are willing to venture? I'm sure you can handle it.

Hi Ari, Been a Beat fan since the beginning. Great show. I agree Trump is a total LOSER. But I have an off-topic question. Is there any update on the Matt Gaetz investigation? Is he going to get away with alleged Dec trafficking of a minor? He’s a poster boy for the white, rich and powerful who seemingly get away with way too much.

Take care,

Kevin

Isn’t respecting democracy what politics is all about in this country?? It certainly should be and, sadly, frequently isn’t…witness MTG, Gym Jordan, Lindsey Graham, Trumpty currently.

Historically the country has been repeatedly reminded of the authoritarian elements simmering at or near the surface…witness the Civil War (That wasn’t an authoritarian thing, you say? How might you define owning people??), sympathy for the Nazis during the ‘30s (Ask Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford and the American Nazi Party gathering at Madison Square Garden in 1938 about that.), ask Barry Goldwater about “extremism in defense of liberty”. Ask Richard Nixon.

True democracy is indeed a fragile thing.

You summed it up succinctly and so well. Too many pundits and the repugs who espouse 'saying it makes it so ' did have me quite apprehensive. Am still in the wonderful post re-election exhale. Am delighted with the Blue victories, punctuated by Georgia. Trying to put off my dread of the Marjorie Green (and ilk) yak-yak till post-holiday.
