I watched your interview with her. Her grace and passions are obvious. The scientific facts she brought to light are studied today. I’m glad David was fascinated with her.! She accepted the Barbie for the role model she’s become and looks forward to more girls to become interested in awe inspiring nature. Great Beat interview and subsequently your informative article.

Having read this article and after watching your interview Ari on YouTube with Jane Goodall I have a very near and dear opinion and takeaway of the subject at hand. Jane Goodall is just an international treasure and example and role model to all, men and woman alike. She portrays a reality where we are all interdependent and we are. Where we as humans rely on not only the mass industrialized farming of animals to eat and survive. But while we destroy the animal's spirits through these non free ranging mass producing farms that treat these sentient beings like machinery to produce nourishment to the over populated masses. How are these mass produced farm animals who are so poorly treated unlike the cherished riches as we see our family members we call pets. And how we are destroying the earth through deforestation and sending entire species into extinction. Juxtaposed to that, where as the deforestation happening throughout the world is destroying the habitats for our wild life for more land to farm and feed as well as build and house the exploding growth of the developed and developing world. A world already so over populated how are we to sustain life as we know it today for both man and wild life alike in generations to come. As Jane Goodall so affectionately discussed her love for all sentient beings as do I, and how we as a world society of people are supposed to not only coexist in harmony with animals both domestic and wild but, as grim as it sounds, how are we to maintain the sustenance to feed this globe at large.

Hey Ari great interview with Ms Goodall. She is an inspiration to anyone that has a passion they want to pursue. Her determination to have the chimpanzees to trust her paid off. The hug from the chimpanzee was so heartwarming.

On another subject, I saw your Politics & Prose J6 Commitee Report event on YouTube. That was a really informative and fun evening. You and John Flannery were great and we learned so much. All the questions were good. We learned you were a litle adult at 9 years old,and that John Flannery got to see John F Kennedy when he was a young Senator. Thanks Ari for having events like these that we can eventually see online. Take care, be safe. We will see you tonight for another great show.😊🙏❤️

Just watched it online this morning- it was wonderful! The information- and the Q&A was terrific! Both Ari & Flannery answering questions! Hearing Ari discuss himself as a child what fun! It was like he was describing part of my childhood! I was and still am a talker and I asked questions constantly. I can just imagine a little version of Ari asking people where they met their spouse! Adorable!!

Hi Pamela 🤗 I just love that we were able to watch this event. It was fun and very informative. Tha retired teacher had a great question to both of them..So glad to learn something personal about them. Which reminded me about a similar incident. I had a friend whose little boy was a smart little man. When he was 5 years old he answered the phone with, " Hi Ms V, how are you? It's been so long since I've talked to you". No surprise that he is also a lawyer now.

Waiting on The Beat in an hour. Have a blessed evening.😊🙏❤️

Hi V! It was definitely fun! That had to be a great reminder of that little 5 year old you once knew!

The questions were amazing! The lady that said she could speak Vulgarian made me laugh as I am the same.

I do enjoy when Mr. Flannery and Ari are together as the friendship is so evident.

This venue was perfect as well - AND I could see Ari’s awesome SHOES!! 🙃😎.

My only issue with our change to streaming is not seeing The Beat as early!! ☺️ Enjoy the Show V!!

Beautifully written- I can understand tiring talking about herself. Her true self is a force of nature and it will take someone like her to continue with creatures great and small. Each time we lose another species, we lose a small part of ourselves. We may not be as effective or as “famous” but if WE choose to do one thing - just one thing that helps mankind rather than the “self” it can make a difference. It may be donating, it may be adopting an animal but one good thing done by many turns into a great thing. When we humans continue to think in terms of power or money we lose a bit of our humanity. I am saddened by the people in power who choose to deny the problem because it is not worth the money? That will be the demise of human civilization.

I agree! We will destroy our country from within. Just last week, Chevron did a $75 billion dollar stock buyback! No raises to the workers, no lowering of gas prices-as a matter of fact, they’re increasing. No big environmental plans! I believe I read where they weren’t even drilling, at this time. So, the only thing that’s pumping are profits.

As to Jazz- and Samara Joy, I’m so glad you highlighted this artist and the place of jazz in the contemporary world. I love jazz like you love rap. I thinks it’s timeless, soulful, joyous, totally addictive. You asked if it was passé- but is Mozart or Chopin passé? If something is beautiful does it ever go out of style? She answered your questions masterfully. I hope others see it her way and I hope she wins at the Grammy’s.

Hi S.R.! You are so right! Over the weekend, i was in a debate (with a couple of friends) about our greed, as a people. We were referencing our closets being overwhelmed by clothes/shoes/purses and the giveaways/donations. I compared it to other countries: people’s needs vs our glut. Both were offended-one more than the other. I pointed out the SUVs, being driven by ONE person; five cars for a family of three; oversized homes and mansions; Starbucks, etc. The waste is never ending! And YES, if there is a space or a spot, we will fill it with something, to generate a dollar. It doesn’t matter if it causes respiratory problems to the community.

Hello Olddiva,

Yes! Industrialized nations use up a ton of Earth's resources and contribute significantly to pollution and other environmental hazards. Yet, it has been shown that the brunt of the costs are borne by less developed nations. How is that just? And to your point, why does one person *need* so many vehicles???

I am in a civic wrangle this moment in my adorable town: Lake Worth Beach, Florida. It is a David and Goliath story, and perhaps inappropriate to blab about here, but somehow I think it is where I am lead.

I have presented plans to our City Commission once on December 11 (~minute 21) and the second time July 5 2022 (~ minute 22 on Youtube). I present dreamy alternatives for them to ponder. Our town is the last of a dying breed of "20th Century South Florida Beach Vernacular Architecture"...is what I call our brand. Like everything else beautiful it has a price. The CRA which is an instrument of ll cities for developing amassed 8 blocks of property from 2018, and rendered folks homeless to leave those historic building vacant and go to waste over the Covid years. They had the audacity to tear down ah historic structure in "Then Old Town Historic District" built by Arthur le Baron Weeks just a few days after a commission meting in which over fifty folks from our small city showed up and begged for them to not do so. They did. They presented a plan for a monolith. A new administration got elected on the grounds that they would help in preserving our cottages. On Tuesday night they held a special meeting that was noticed, and sneakily voted to tear down most of the structures. I spoke at that meeting and made the Mayor and commissioners aware that the structure on LaKE Avenue was one of only two residences still standing on. that street. I guess you can't fight city hall. Does anyone have any suggestions. The wrecking ball is toddling over that way now. I'm so sad to loose the last moment in history with greed and development leading the way.

Progress?? Aren't they supposed to represent you commissioners are appointed by mayor Seems like they have a plan vot for people who will represent you. Listen and communicate with those that live in community Not clear they don't provide homes to those affected there is a law in New york that must provide housing could be relocation However those residents have first rights to move back at an affordable rent

Hi Jill, I’m so sorry about this plight in your little town. I, too, am in a small city, and we fight like the dickens to keep it so; we lost the FWY fight 20+ years ago, but controlled the exits (ONE). I can hear and feel your pain; unfortunately, this sounds as if it’s on the move. And yes, GREED! Don’t be surprised, if that monolith turns into a bigger project. Sending you lots of HUGS:🤗 🤗🤗

Excellent point on Greed - people think they “need” so many things then wonder why there is stress, gas prices for so many cars - needing to keep up with the Joneses, or the NBA, NFL etc etc. It is taking a grove of beautiful trees and bulldozing it for another track of look alike homes that are poorly constructed. This topic is one that I feel strongly about. I recycle, keep lights turned off, as much as I’m able.

Expand full comment

I recycle by saving for a neighbor. I took 6-7 huge bags to a recycling venue, and was told I had to uncap and crush each bottle. It was >100 degrees. I learned to crush each bottle, upon emptying, but I was out of the recycling business for myself. My father taught us to turn off the lights, once you exit a room. My family leaves every light on in the house, when visiting. I simply endure it, but tremble inside, at the waste.🙄😂

But I am also the same with lights - I walk around and turn them off - when it is just me the lights are off as I leave a room.

I really appreciate this interview as an antidote to our policies of dominating and exploiting our planet for profit. She has always been so remarkable for her patience in allowing the natural world to unfold rather than forcing an outcome. I think that’s an important lesson in human studies. Her work underscored so many primatologists attempts to try and explain why Homo sapiens do what they do. I guess humans are slow learners or they believe themselves to be so special that they don’t have to factor nature into their life metric. I loved this interview if for no other reason than to have gratitude for our beautiful world and all the creatures that live here

Great article Ari. Human beings are indeed, a part of the natural world. We are not superior to it, nor inferior. Yet, unfortunately, most of the time humanity has acted as though nature is something to be tamed, subjugated, and in many cases (look at our big cities) destroyed in favor of human habitation rather than trying to co-exist with those life-forms that also live here. No, I'm not in favor of letting skunks invade our neighborhoods.... some have at least one of the human variety anyway.

Jane Goodall's dedidication and work over her lifetime are to be praised, as she has contributed much understanding on other species that occupy our little planet. Obviously we are not the only ones to be affected by climate change, e.g., polar bears, Florida Panthers, manatees, Monarch butterflies, but we are the ones with the science and technology to mitigate the damage and save these creatures that belong here just as much as we do.

I'm reminded of the line by Rodney King during the Watts Riots years ago: "Why can't we all just get along?"

Again, terrific article !!

It must have been such a pleasure and a delightful experience for you Ari to interview Jane Goodall. As a human people we really should listen to her and the like. Humanity cannot exists without the knowledge gained from what science teaches. It takes knowledge and the wisdom conveyed from people like Jane to help us sustain a healthy environment and thus a healthy and enjoyable life. It’s not hard to imagine life without air, water and vegetation, just look at the moon or any planet outside of earth. We are on that path and some people actually think making “ money “ is more important than taking care of the environment. Staying ignorant does not help any situation or circumstance. We’ve made money necessary for the exchange of goods and services but it’s actually good healthy air and water quality that keeps us all alive. The USA is less than 300 years old and a lot of water is so polluted ya can’t drink it, eat the fish, or in some cases advised not to even swim in, and Air quality alerts in industrialized areas, the list goes on and on….…. The Native people of this land were so right about so many things. It really comes down to living in balance with our surroundings with one word in mind

“ Harmony “. I really enjoyed your interview with Jane Goodall !
