I thought it was illegal to attempt to overthrow a government and here we are. The DOJ must make an example. All involved should be tried for treason. Especially the ring leader. Living in a red state, I totally agree with Professor Snyder's concern. The posts by people that I thought were decent and nice have begun to erode my faith in human nature. The people responsible for January 6 have to be held accountable or insurrectionists have won.
I read you piece with Prof Snyder. I sadly agree with him. What’s going on now is quite alarming. I’m a 72 yr old grandma and I worry about what the future will hold for my grandchildren.

I do share Professor Snyder's concern. Sometimes the machinations of a slow moving coup can be invisible to the eye, but not now. We are watching with our own eyes the spread of the lie as it infiltrates the institutional machinery.
With all his kidding aside, Bill Maher recently outlined the big coup and where it's heading. I apologize for referencing a comedian and authoritarian expert in the same sentence, but Maher's and Snyder's analyses are spot on and chilling.
If anything I think we (the ones who want to get our country back) are not alarmist enough. The Republicans in the Senate, to their shame, are blocking all efforts to tell the truth. They know what is, and has been. going on and I don't know how they can live with themselves. I pray that Trump and his lies and those that choose to believe him will be proven for what they are and will be brought to their knees.
If we know that someone, anyone, is planning a coup, why can’t the individuals in question be arrested for Treason? I simply don’t understand why we are putting up with this! They should ALL be in jail, without bail, awaiting trial. WTF?

There are countless books written by Germans of my (our) generation, explaining how history could have progressed, and Hitler could have failed, if only… please watch the documentary Exterminate All the Brutes. Created by the same brilliant man who made I’m Not Your Negro. Because what accompanies totalitarianism is genocide. Stalin murdered millions of Russians who did not agree with him. Hitler murdered his own men (Night of the Ling Knives) when they became too powerful. He murdered anyone he did not like, who did not agree with him and who was not like him. Totalitarianism is built on lies, begets mass murder, destroys reason, goodness and hope. If we are going to stop Trump’s coup, the justice department, the police, the military, the CIA and FBI need to act as one. We regular Joe’s need to organize demonstrations all over the country, demanding Trump’s arrest, demanding his imprisonment along with all his co-Horts. If we’re too lazy to fight for our own country, then perhaps we don’t deserve the freedoms we take for granted? My parents loved America, they were grateful to be here, as am I. But if we don’t write to our Congressmen, if we don’t demonstrate, if we don’t challenge Trump’s new online presence, then we are simply all talk.

Prof. Snyder is spot on. We are seeing all the preparations in real time. The GOP is so shameless, they know they are placing all their operatives in place to take over all the upcoming elections. I don't think the demoracts are taking this as seriously as they should. Our lawmakers are no longer looking out for our democracy. This is getting scarier by the day.. God help us!!!🙏
The reason why Trump is still a free man (at least in my opinion/ point of view) are as follows:
White privileged
Democrats or rather the people in government (some decent Republicans if there are any left) are too scared and way too cautious to take actions
Has a strong hold on the Republicans and the former Confederate states (the South)
Like you mentioned nothing has happened to Trump and this is setting the standard for a potential and successful coup d’état. I definitely agree with Tim Snyder on his analysis on this topic.

I have listened to you and your esteemed guests on The Beat (Elie Mystal, Neal Katyal, etc.) to know what your point of views are about the consequences of not dealing with this insurrection (coup d’état) properly.
We (Americans and the world) all saw the insurrection live in TV so there’s no sugar coating it or like the GQP members stated, “ there were tourists, or let’s just move on.” What?!?! After nearly killing all Congress members and Vice President? Oh no!
If Trump, all the members of Congress, lawyers , his family members, friends and all that planned the coup d’état are not held accountable for nearly killing all Congress members and Vice President, then we should stop claiming or proclaiming that “no one is against the law.”
It is important to set an example, send a message that if one commits a crime, there are consequences. The law and the Constitution applies to every American. The Congress and Biden administration must take drastic measures in preventing another insurrection or else, it will definitely happen again and with success

They become belligerent if I say anything progressive. Definitely under educated. Then there is Gosar and Biggs and many many more. The TV commercials are so many lies. Totally unbelievable.

Are Democrats concerned about this coup? They certainly are not acting like it. The Jan 6 Committee is plodding along at a snail's pace as the country is changing right before our eyes. I think a little more than half of the country is against Trump and yet you wouldn't know it...I write letters to Romney and Lee all the time...I get a polite "thank you" letter. They are complicit but so are the Democrats everywhere who sit back and watch it happen.
