Absolutely. It’s a senate tradition, not a bylaw, and it was used to prevent civil rights legislation. I will never vote for my current Senator Sinema again. A complete disappointment bordering on a disaster.
I think she’s a GOP plant. What is her voting history, activism? Its so odd that everything she ran on to get elected she is opposing????? People need to call her out on that. Im not a constituent but wrote to her and no response yet.
HI Ari, my name is David and I'm an Air Force Veteran. I know you probably won't respond to this because you have thousands of followers. I look forward to your show everyday. I appreciate your personality, humor, knowledge, intelligence and integrity in covering pressing issues. Your show is a bright spot in my day as I'm a full time caregiver for my wife who had a brain tumor removed last year which has impacted her life. I was a loadmaster on C130 and C141 aircrafts and traveled all over the world while in the military. My family is all from VA and PA, I grew up 30 miles from Jefferson's estate at Monticello in the Shenandoah Valley close to the Blueridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. I personally feel the filibuster should be modified or eliminated because the GOP is holding our country hostage, the majority of Americans spoke loudly, freely and clearly during 2020 election. More importantly what concerns me the most as a Veteran that served our country like millions of other Veterans, we honored our oath to protect our Constitution and Republic, unlike our ex-president and GOP, they make a mockery of this and are hypocrites because they took the same oath. Trump and the GOP did everything they could to undermine the Constitution and got away with it. They have no respect for rule of law, due process of law or separation of powers. Never in my lifetime did I think I would see a coup attempt or an insurrection because a narcistic , autocrat lost an election and was a poor loser. I see the GOP as the obstruction party, they have no plans, they are the cancel culture party and the voter suppression party, they can't run and win on their own merits, so they suppress voting and employ gerrymandering in their efforts to win. Our ex president is a nationalist and a racist who embraces supremacists that are part of his base and the GOP turns a blind eye to this, our country is going backwards not forward. Hate crimes have doubled in our country or tripled because the last administration turned a blind eye to this because a lot of our ex-president's base are racists and supremacists that have been given a platform in the GOP power grab.
David - I did indeed see your message, thank you for your service - and wishing you and your wife the very best.
Appreciate your points and concerns about the state of the nation. On a random personal note, I've been hiking in Shenandoah, a nice countryside! Thanks for reaching out. Ari
Well said David! Thank you. I was raised as an AF military brat (Pop was Air-Sea Rescue). Stationed at Patrick/ Eglin/ Wheelis/ Edwards/ Albrook/ Athens, Greece, Travis) we saw a lot. Then with family roots out of Atlanta and North Carolina, it was strokes of luck to live amongst others around the world. I am sure it made us better versions of our selves, and made us clearly appreciate what we have . Now at 71 years, I did not see our dissolution coming. Our eyes have been opened. Democracy we have learned is not a given. Hopefully we can hold on to it. Don Wilson in Davis, Ca
My sincere appreciation for your service on behalf of all of us, David, and for your clear-eyed wisdom and dedication to our Constitution and our nation's best interests.
Totally agree, but the problem remains that the Dems only have a 50-50 Senate with the VP's vote to comprise a majority, and within that 50 "D" caucus sit Manchin and Sinema(and probably a couple more hiding behind them) who remain reluctant to take off those gloves, especially where the filibuster is concerned. Clearly, those 2 REALLY enjoy the massively disproportionate power this numerical reality gives them, and they know that the rest of the Democratic Party can't go "all Terminator" on them, because if either one slips across the aisle to the GOP, the Senate instantly flips, "Grim Reaper" McConnell becomes Majority Leader again, and all is lost, including the entire Biden agenda. Goddam frustrating, to say the least!
The debt ceiling would be an excellent place to start to help pacify those who are always afraid of any change whatsoever even if it helps improve their lives.
The reticent Dems' "defensive filibuster" reasoning is foolish; do they think if the tables were turned, McConnell would resist for a moment bending or obliterating the filibuster to achieve opposing GOP agenda items of competing magnitude to those within the Biden agenda, especially if it would serve to advance Mitch's personal interests??? I'm a KY Democrat and, sadly, know McConnell only too well, so I can assure anyone who believes such a fantasy that I've got the well-known Brent Spence I-71/I-75 bridge over the Ohio River that I'll sell them...real cheap! If handed the majority again, odds are he will one day do just that! The Senate Democrats MUST by hook or crook pry open the Senate filibuster rule, and once they've untied that Gordian Knot, they must--at the very least--reduce it to its former "talking filibuster", with explicit carve-outs for the debt ceiling and voting and election security legislation. If it comes to this, every good Democrat, Independent and, yes, Republican in America should sign a pledge to join in regular pilgrimages to piss on the graves of Manchin, Sinema et al., unless they have the requisite "road to Damascus epiphanies" on the filibuster necessary to save our democratic republic at this truly existential tipping point! McConnell's handling of the debt limit is POSSIBLY a strategic miscalculation: he has inadvertently opened the door to filibuster reform, based on his confidence that the Dems don't have the balls to play chicken to the point of opting for "the nuclear option", in lieu of defaulting on the national debt and destroying the 243 year-old full faith and credit of the U.S. government. We should indeed "go nuclear" and shove that "Jim Crow filibuster" right up Mitch's venal, craven and cynical ass!!!
There is an episode in Stargate where there are two bracelets that have a negative. The removal of the bracelets frees both. I repeat; ( The removal frees Both Of them.)
With that said, Democracy isn't Democracy unless 51 beats 50.
Either you believe in your progressive agenda or you don’t. If you won’t do what it takes to change things you don’t deserve to be representing the people. This is the perfect time to change things and see if it will create the momentum to sustain our democracy. The alternative Republican autocracy is not an option. Clearly eliminating the filibuster is the only option and this our last chance to do it.
Democrats need to Stop being so passive they very well knew that Bannon was not going to appear today for there hearing they need to Stop playing games and start getting Respect enough is Enough.
Ending the filibuster will help to forward President Biden's policies that are meant to help people, not corporations. It is disgusting that the Republicans can easily give tax breaks to people who don't need them and then complain about the cost to help people. The modern Republican Party has allegiance to a very big loser, Donald Trump, and not to the American people.
Yes! Eliminating the filibuster would bring us a little closer to some degree of democracy. Would allow straight up and down votes. Senators would have to show their cards. Thank you Ari!
Another secret: Democrats are letting Republicans take the flack about not ending the filibuster but there are Democrats who are just as stubborn about and invested in retaining this Jim Crow relic. Otherwise, it would already be gone.
I have stopped watching most of the news until there is some real outrage over 2 Republican people in congress who ran as Democrats. Manchin is another Sudan Collins. Post Trump and all his corruption his cult is not letting go and the Democrats need to really move and remove the filibuster. Steam roll this pseudo Republican Party. ENOUGH

Once upon a time she was very progressive state legislator. Even a Green Party member.

Your welcome Don, I reside in eastern WA and I lived in southern CA in my youth
My sincere appreciation for your service on behalf of all of us, David, and for your clear-eyed wisdom and dedication to our Constitution and our nation's best interests.
Your welcome Clark , thank you
Time for the DEMS to take off their gloves.

Yes, especially to pass voting rights legislation.

*or at least the political equivalent to "pissing on their graves". LOL.
You've explained everything brilliantly.
Very well said!!!👍

Eliminate the filibuster! Go big or go home!!
Democrats need to Stop being so passive they very well knew that Bannon was not going to appear today for there hearing they need to Stop playing games and start getting Respect enough is Enough.
Right, there are several areas where this Congress is being tested on what it means to wield power.
Ending the filibuster will help to forward President Biden's policies that are meant to help people, not corporations. A thousand times yes. The filibuster is a roadblock to action to save the democracy.
Another secret: Democrats are letting Republicans take the flack about not ending the filibuster but there are Democrats who are just as stubborn about and invested in retaining this Jim Crow relic. Otherwise, it would already be gone.

If the dems are compromising they’re losing because you cannot compromise with a party, or two senators who have given up on democracy!
